Claremont Public Library Burned Down

This is an example of web 2.0 being used to keep in contact with a client base after a disaster.  Go to http://claremontlibrarywithoutwalls.blogspot.com/ to view their response to keeping on serving their clients.  More power to them.

INF506 First Entry

This is the first Online Journal entry for my INF506 blog.
A.
My understanding of social networking is that it is a form of social intercourse with the intervention of electronic communication.
So instead of the afternoon tea party or a tete-a-tete at the coffee shop there is blogging, tweeting, wikis and texting. This changes the access from strictly geographical to global, expands the range of contacts from the immediate neighbourhood to worldwide and changes the timeframe from a specific hour to 24 hours daily.
B.
At present my workplace supports web 1.0 and actively blocks web 2.0. So access to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter is blocked. In fact, until there was a major protest from the health librarians group so was Amazon.com. To unblock a site a formal process including forms, one’s manager and the head of the area is required on a case-by-case basis. There has been lip service to the idea that the principles of web 2.0 communication are supported. The only web 2.0 tool used at present is a wiki created to support the use of the new library management system, Millennium, of the health libraries group.
C.
Since my practical knowledge of web 2.0 is infinitesimal I expect to receive a solid foundation in the physical aspects of working in web 2.0 environments and an understanding of all the various pitfalls that dealing with a new technology entails. I hope to gain an insight into the social aspects of web 2.0 that can be translated and promoted in the work environment.
